As a result of leveraging this data, about 330 hospitals improved their decision-making and healthcare processes. This resulted in saving 29,000 lives and reducing spending by almost $7 billion.
How partnering with an EDW vendor helped a hospital
Data analysts at a hospital discovered a pattern of patients who had a certain procedure and ended up staying in the hospital for almost two days. However, evidence concluded that these patients could have been released after only a 12-hour stay because they were simple cases.
Analysts used the electronic data warehouse and worked with a vendor to verify that the shorter stay wouldn’t have any negative impact on patients. They also looked at how this change would affect patient satisfaction and readmissions. The analysts concluded that the annual savings for one hospital lowering the length of stay for this procedure would be more than $150,000.
Using an EDW to integrate best practices with clinical processes
At one hospital, analysts studied appendectomies and found that the recommended initial dose of antibiotics was administered to only one in four of these patients. Doctors at the hospital met, reviewed the data and agreed to a revised care plan. As a result, compliance with the antibiotic baseline went up to 95 percent.
